What does skydiving feel like?
Skydiving is such an amazing sense of freedom. It is a sensation that is difficult to explain. It has to be experienced to be understood. Many people who make tandem skydives say the parachute ride is their favorite part. You can really see the earth as never before, and you have the best seat in the house as you and your instructor float down. You have a 360 view of everything. There really is no better view than looking at earth under a parachute. How hard will I land? Under most circumstances, you’ll land relatively soft. With state of the art parachutes, landings are most often light and injuries rare. Skydiving is a sport that has inherent risks, but those risks are minimized through awareness and through training and certification from the United States Parachute Association.

Tandem Jumps with Parachuting.com Garland
A Tandem jump is a thrill like none other. From the moment you get off the plane, you get to see the world in a whole new way. At an altitude of about 14,000 feet Above Ground Level (AGL) and wind blasting your face you get to enjoy the thrill and exhilaration of free-falling over the skies with the chance to get a great look at the amazing views
With a tandem jump, you’ll get to experience the thrill and beauty of skydiving with the security of an instructor right there with you. They are great for first-time skydivers.
Points to remember while preparing for your skydive
You are to arrive at the drop zone earlier than your scheduled jump. This way you’ll get acquainted with the facilities and determine where your family or friends may wait for you. You also get to meet your Skydive Instructor who will brief you on what to expect during your-your skydiving experience in order to prepare you for your skydive. This will include how to position your body properly. You will be given the opportunity to watch a video that would reveal to you what to expect during your Tandem Skydive.
Now you are ready for your skydive. As such you will be outfitted in the appropriate gear and board the aircraft along with your instructor. The plane will be ascended to the jump elevation in the plane, the instructor will attach him/herself to you.
After which you and your instructor will move toward the doorway and you will appear to be sitting right above the back wheel.
Now you are ready to jump. The jump which is to come from 10,000 plus feet will consist of a free fall to last for 26 to 30 second (some lasts slightly longer). At this point you may achieve speeds of up to 120 mph. The parachute will open at an altitude of about 5500-6000 feet and consequently the speed will reduce and allow for a peaceful decent back to the drop zone (this will typically take 6 minutes or so).
As you get close to the ground, it’s time to wave to your friends and family and then feet up whilst your tandem instructor takes control and lands the canopy then you can celebrate your achievement with friends and family.
Equipment for Tandem jumps
To be honest, skydiving, just like every other activity involves risk. However, like the rest of the activities, we’ve learned to accept them and we do so while striving to always minimize those risks in our lives.
- Passenger Harness
- 4 points at which the instructor can attach to the novice
- 2 on the shoulders, two on the hips
- Main Parachute
- Drogue Chute – Created to handle the stress of two people. Using the equation in which one determines that based on the excess in weight of two people using one chute, with the same wind resistance, it’s imperative to have the drogue to slow the acceleration of the speed of free fall. The drogue is a smaller chute attached to the main chute to provide supplementary resistance. The drogue allows for two people to free fall at the same speed as a single skydiver.
- Reserve Chute
- Automatic Activation Device (AAD) – In the simplest of terms, the AAD is a small device that monitors a skydiver’s speed and altitude and deploys the reserve chute in the event of an issue.

Learn to skydive with Parachuting.com Garland
Learn to skydive with our skydiving program in Parachute.com Garland in Texas.
Our instruction is facilitated by FAA certified skydivers, allowing the customer to train to become eligible to receive certification from FAA.
The two main styles in which training is observed are Accelerated Free Fall and Static Line Progression.
AFF – Accelerated Free Fall
Accelerated Freefall is a high level of instruction toward the pursuance of skydiving certification.
Steps in AFF Instruction
There are seven steps in USPA mandated AFF Instruction.
In levels one through three, two certified Instructors will jump alongside the students. At level three, the students will be released to fall entirely on their own.
In the levels 4-7 the students will receive Instruction for ‘In air skills’ and performing ‘Superman’ exits from the aircraft.
Congratulations on Completion of your AFF Instruction at Parachuting.com
So, what’s next?
Following the completion of level seven, the student skydiver begins what is called the Integrated Student Program (ISP) during which they continue to practice various maneuvers and apply principles on their own or with instructor’s until they have achieved the qualifying number of jumps (25) to apply for their A license.
Static Line Progression (S/L)
The student executes an exit from an aircraft, during which the main canopy is deployed by a static line affixed to the aircraft.
Static Line Progression Instruction Process
The student will receive a four to five hour ground instruction, after which the first S/L Jump will be commenced at 3,000 ft AGL. Other jumps will require 15 minutes of ground instruction. After the execution of two effective S/L jumps, students will be instructed on how to deploy their own chute and then required to demonstrate a free fall. Upon completion of 25 jumps, the student may apply for their A license and be cleared of student status.

Share Your Skydiving Experience with Parachuting.com’s Imagery Packages
Don’t miss out on recording your skydive experience. It’s the best way to remember this experience forever. Also, it would be pretty cool to be able to share the big event with others.
We have two imagery packages available for purchase alongside our skydive services. One is our videography service in which a camera flyer is available to jump with you to film your experience from start to finish. Our GoPro/Handycam is our second option, and it includes your skydiving instructor wearing the GoPro camera equipped to record your actions and experience from a more up close and personal vantage point.
The camera flyer will record your thoughts as you prepare for your jump even prior to boarding the plane. They will exit the aircraft slightly before you to get the most advantageous perspective to capture you in excitement. They will record your various screams and yells and facial expressions. They will land a little before you to capture your amazing landing.
You will be given a CD containing the final edited version of your jump and still images that were captured throughout your jump.
Criteria for becoming a camera flyer
Shooting videos while skydiving or being a camera flyer can be a fun as well as a rewarding job. Flying a camera is as fun as it gets skydiving. In fact, you’ll get to be one of the few to get shots most people can’t even imagine.
It is important you know that to be a camera flyer, you should be an experienced skydiver. It is highly recommended that you are a C license holder before strapping on a camera. Jumping with additional equipment takes additional training.
Unlike a Tandem or AFF Instructor, who is required to qualify and earn a rating, there is no camera rating within the sport. The USPA and other organizations have come up with some general ideas as to what qualifications a beginning camera flyer should have, but most of these items are only recommendations and not a set training curriculum.
- Assistance in selecting camera equipment (cameras, mounts, etc.).
- Training on additional equipment such as suits, wings, canopies, etc.
- Camera equipment and its interaction with the parachute system.
- Wind-tunnel training with equipment before first jump with new equipment.
- Aircraft procedures and exit strategies for chosen discipline.
- Special emergency procedures.
- Break-off procedures.
