Why jump out of a perfectly good airplane?

Legendary climber George Mallory, when asked why he attempted Mount Everest, simply replied, “because it’s there”.
Why do people jump out of airplanes? Perhaps it is because humans since the dawn of time have looked up and wondered what it would be like to defy the law of gravity. Occasionally, we need to step out of the ordinary and push ourselves to new limits. This is exactly what skydiving does. In the sky, it’s just you, your parachute and the wind – no distractions, no alarm clocks and no texts. Step out of the plane and into the freedom you may have forgotten.

You will jump out the door together at an altitude of around 10,000 feet and freefall for up to 30 seconds, reaching speeds as high as 120 mph. At about 6,000 feet, your parachute will open, and you will spend the next six minutes or so in a leisurely descent. Your friends and family will meet you in the drop zone to celebrate.

BASE Jumping Not for Faint of Heart

Jumping out of an airplane that is 10,000 feet in the air is one thing. Parachuting off an earthbound object is something else entirely. That is why BASE (Building, Antenna, Span and Earth) jumping is considered one of the world’s most dangerous (and thrilling) sports. Jumpers have only a few seconds to deploy their parachutes and little or no time to react to a problem. Carl Boenish is credited with the first BASE jump, off El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, in 1978. What does it take, besides nerves of steel, to become a BASE jumper? Most experts recommend completing at least 200 skydives before considering BASE jumping. The first step is to read voraciously, both about the sport itself and the equipment and training necessary to be successful. Next, look for a first jump course, or FJC. The FJC will provide valuable information about both gear and jumping. Then look for a mentor who can provide one-on-one training. One good way to meet a potential mentor is to volunteer to work on the ground crew of experienced jumpers. BASE jumping clearly is not for everyone. However, for those who are willing to accept the discipline and risk, few other thrills can compare.

Solo Parachuting Academy in Cape Coral, FL

Jump into Advanced Training in our Skydiving Academy

Tandem skydiving is the perfect way for people to get their feet wet in an exciting new sport. For those ready to jump in with both feet, Parachuting.com Cape Coral offers a full menu of skydiving instruction, all provided by Federal Aviation Administration-certified instructors. Are you ready to take the next step?

Static line progression is a jump that begins at 3,000 feet in which the student executes a somewhat balanced or suspended exit from the plane. As the student skydiver falls away from the aircraft, the main canopy is deployed by a static line attached to aircraft, followed by a free fall of two to three minutes.

Accelerated free fall is exactly what the name suggests. Students will work through seven progressive steps of instruction in solo skydives. The first freefall will be made after around seven hours of instruction. Information covered in each level of instruction includes:

Levels 1-3
Requires assistance of two certified Instructors to jump alongside the student. Students receive instruction in altitude awareness, body position, stability, pull sequence and effective chute deployment. Level 3 will see the student being released in actual free fall to fall entirely on their own.

Levels 4-7

  • Instruction for in-air skills.
  • Turns.
  • Forward movement.
  • Docking onto others.
  • Performing “Superman” exits from the aircraft.

After completing level seven, skydivers enter the integrated student program and continue to practice various maneuvers and apply principles on their own or with an instructor. After completing 24 jumps, they can qualify for their A license, which enables them to skydive when and where they want.

Where There is Fire, There are Smokejumpers.

Safety comes first at Parachuting.com Cape Coral, and we show our students how to avoid potential danger. Another class of skydivers, however, spends their time looking for trouble. These are smokejumpers, who perform the essential service of parachuting into remote wilderness areas to fight wildfires.

Smokejumpers trace their proud heritage back more than 70 years, when early experiments were conducted in Utah. The first professional fire jumps came in 1940, when two jumpers were inserted into a fire in the Nez Perce National Forest. The first female smokejumper successfully completed training in 1981.

Today, more than 270 smokejumpers work for the U.S. Forest Service from bases located in Idaho, California, Montana, Washington and Oregon. The Bureau of Land Management operates two bases, in Idaho and Alaska. Smokejumpers typically work from June through October, which is the peak season for wildfires in the West. After jumpers land, firefighting tools, food and water are dropped by parachute to make them self-sufficient for 48 hours. Training pushes skydiving skills to the limit. Trainees must be skilled in both firefighting and skydiving and meet rigorous standards for fitness, alertness and emotional stability. In addition to fighting fires, smokejumpers spend their downtime in fire-prevention efforts, such as clearing brush and controlled burning. Although improved equipment and training has improved safety, smokejumping remains a profession that attracts only the best of the best.

Relive the Magic with a Video Package

You make your first skydive only once. That’s why you don’t want to miss the opportunity to capture every exciting moment on video. Show it to doubters to prove you really followed through on your promise to jump. Post in on social media and be the talk of the Internet. Save it to show your children and grandchildren. Just don’t forget to capture the moment while you can.

Video packages are available for both tandem skydiving and accelerated freefalls. Two options are available:

  • A camera flyer can accompany you to record the complete adventure.
  • Your instructor can use a GoPro/Handycam camera to record everything up close
Although the professional camera flyer option is slightly more expensive, it still is an affordable choice. He or she will begin by recording your thoughts as you prepare for the flight. It’s always fun to go back and compare how closely the experience matched your expectations.

Our drop zone has full editing capabilities, so your camera flyer will edit your video, add appropriate music and provide the final copy on CD – usually in less than one hour (if you have to leave, it will be mailed). Arrange for a camera flyer in advance, if possible, and don’t forget to include the video package when you give a Parachuting.com gift certificate.

Want to Dive into Being a Camera Flyer?

What could be better than enjoying the unmatched thrills of skydiving? How about getting paid for it and at the same time helping other skydivers preserve their memories?

This is exactly what camera flyers do. But first things first. No one is going to hire a camera flyer who is not already an accomplished skydiver. Sign up for our accelerated freefall instruction at Parachuting.com in Cape Coral and hone your skydiving skills.

Then, of course, you will need to purchase the proper equipment. Do your homework and talk with as many professionals as you can before investing your money. If you have specific skydiving location in mind where you would like to work, ask if they have any particular specifications. Along with the camera, of course, you will need to purchase a professional helmet that is designed for camera mounting.

Always remember that the same rules apply in the air as on the ground:

  • Keep the sun behind you. This is where your skydiving skills come into play.
  • Don’t forget the sound. The yells, screams and bleeped words that accompany the first jump help tell the complete story.
  • Move around. Instead of locking in on a single angle, try to move around for shots above, below and around your subject.
  • Tell a story. Telling a good story is what sets successful camera flyers apart.
